I pulled DUNE out of the video hire last weekend. I never got into the books, but that never lessened my appreciation of the design of the film. A visual feast. (Aside: Kenneth McMillan's performance as Baron Harkonnen was the key to the movie. Fascinating and repulsive at the same time.)
I haven't watched in a very long time, but I had the impression when the movie came out that it wasn't as grim as the critics made it out to be. I had read 'Dune' and didn't think the flick was that far afield. That aside, it remains a distinctly Lynchian vision.
