Hmmm. When I look closer, I clearly see a pink head angled toward the table, as if the figure is reading. The head's color is similar to the building behind it, but definitely there, and matched in scale to the feet.
That 'closer look' often involves so many intangibles (the artist's motives?) and contextual research. It's a shame artists don't last forever. A simple question to her could have avoided a whole lot of forensic art analysis. ;)

Indeed, I'm with you on this. I think Gopnick's reading more into this painting that is there.
