Homeric Landscape

If you appreciate the work of Winslow Homer, you will find this New York Times piece on his Maine home most interesting.

I enjoyed the article, but find it odd that critics question Homer's "realism." Clearly painting, drawing, photography and all forms of art are expressions of an inner vision. Homer's apparent use of how the sea looks at high tide and at low tide in the same painting, for example, reflects a vision of the sea--not a snapshot of the seashore.

I agree. It is, I think, our incessant need to categorize. Rather than see the painting through the prism of a label, what not appreciate the vision for what it is?
